 & FairOriginal Release on Business Wire – June 26, 2023 07:45 EDT

MANSFIELD, OH – IDEAL ELECTRIC COMPANY (IDEAL) of Mansfield, Ohio, announced today the acquisition of the tangible and intangible personal property and certain intellectual property of Louis Allis Large Synchronous Machines and Louis Allis Large Induction Motors, product lines of the former Louis Allis Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  In addition, the acquisition grants IDEAL rights to certain Intellectual Property related to Beloit Power Systems Motors and Generators, Fairbanks Morse Motors and Generators, and Colt Industries Motors and Generators. The deal expands IDEAL’s installation base and gives security to the sustainment of these critical machines to the US Government and other industrial customers.

IDEAL is the nation’s last 100% privately-held, family-owned, vertically integrated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of a full range of specialty high-power electric machinery. IDEAL’s acquisition provides Louis Allis Company’s large motors and generator customers—and the customers of its other legacy brands—with continued service and production of new machines (new designs, replacements, and spares), factory-engineered upgrades, parts, field service, and support.

“IDEAL is committed to being the most capable ‘Build America, Buy America Act’ O.E.M. for motors and generators,” said IDEAL President and Owner Jim Petersen. “Our company combines entrepreneurial American ownership, ultimate control over materials and origin, and full in-house production with the goal to produce 100% made-in-America products. Further, this acquisition greatly increases our installation base and know-how in support of new products and sustainment programs for the defense industry.”

The intellectual property IDEAL acquired, which includes files, drawings, engineering data, design and other information in vast paper, microfilm, and digital stores, has all been relocated to IDEAL’s Mansfield, Ohio, factory and is being digitized for the first time, bringing more than one hundred years of designs into the 21st Century for the benefit of IDEAL’s customers.

The IP includes the right to engineer, design, manufacture, sell and market all Louis Allis Induction Motors above 950 horsepower (HP) including Louis Allis Large Synchronous Machines and Louis Allis Large Induction Motors and the right to use the names “Louis Allis Company,” “Louis Allis Large Motor,” “Louis Allis Large Motor Corporation,” and the Louis Allis stylized logo.

Excluded from this acquisition are the Small Louis Allis A.C. Induction motors below the NEMA N449 frame, Louis Allis A.C. Induction motors up to 950 horsepower (HP) completely made and manufactured outside the United States, and used and reconditioned motors of any frame size.

history of The louis allis company

LOUIS ALLIS IS FOUNDED

The company founder, Louis Allis, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1866 and later, Louis joined his father’s firm in 1888. He advanced rapidly until he became general purchasing agent. In 1901, the company merged with Fraser-Chalmers Manufacturing, calling itself the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company. In August 1901, Mr. Allis invested in the new company, became a director, and took an active part in the management of the 15-employee company. In 1903 he was elected president.

By April 1906, the growing company moved to new quarters at 427 East Stewart Street; the location of the Allis family’s original homestead farm. Mr. Allis foresaw that electric power could be made both economical and universal.

“INTEGRITY, QUALITY, SERVICE”

Louis Allis was sold in 1984, becoming the cornerstone of MagneTek, Inc. The Louis Allis Company’s 1994 renaissance, following a leveraged buyout, reinstituted the Louis Allis “family management” style that once made it the industry leader.

The Louis Allis Company was manufacturing any motor from the smallest frame size to the largest and was capable of doing all testing for other motor manufacturers.

Mr. Allis adopted the slogan – “Integrity, Quality, Service” – for his fledgling company. Allis’ ideals were followed for 100 years after he first introduced them to his employees.

TODAY, Louis Allis large motors and machines are in solid hands with IDEAL, a company that cares and has all the resources to support you, the Louis Allis customer.

LEARN MORE ABOUT IDEAL

LOUIS ALLIS TODAY

In the 1990s, the company underwent several ownership changes and restructurings in an attempt to adapt to the changing market conditions. Despite these efforts, the company ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 1998. The assets of the Louis Allis Company were subsequently divided into product lines and acquired by private investors. The synchronous product line, including Beloit Power Systems, Fairbanks Morse motors and generators, and Colt Industries motors and generators, was later combined with the large induction motor product line to form the complete portfolio of Louis Allis Synchronous and Louis Allis Large Induction Motors and Generators.

In 2023, it was announced that IDEAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, a leading American manufacturer of electric motors and generators, has acquired the certain intellectual property of Louis Allis Large Synchronous Machines and Louis Allis Large Induction Motors, Beloit Power Systems Motors and Generators, Fairbanks Morse Motors and Generators, and Colt Industries Motors and Generators.

Today, under the IDEAL ELECTRIC umbrella, the Louis Allis Company Large Motors and Generators have the security in the manufacturing, sustainment, and support of these critical machines, staying true to its legacy of quality and innovation to the US Government and other industrial customers.

PERFECT MATCH

Louis Allis built machines much like IDEAL builds machines, allowing us to further expand and support our customers.

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES

The stator construction used in Louis Allis rotating equipment is the result of continued research and developmend, dedicated to the improvement or performance, life expectancy, insulation materials, manufacturing techniques, and reliability.

The synchronous and induction products used shaft designs that were computer matched to give optimum configuration for bearing span, rotor weights and operating speed. Shafts with large cross sections eliminated potential shaft stiffness and critical speed problems, thus maximizing stability.

Excitiation for Louis Allis synchronous products were provided either by brushless type; or if specified, by the brush-type utilizing high grade carbon brushes, cast bronze slip rings and heavy cast brush holder. Every Louis Allis product was proven reliable in the multimillion dollar test facility. Crucial testing performed at the Louis Allis plant included:

  • Noise testing per IEEE 85, as well as their own, more stringent, noise tests
  • Spray and underwater high potential testing of completely wound and insulated stators
  • Operating-speed vibration testing with the generator mounted on its own bearings
